Simple Woman's Daybook: 17Jan11
FOR TODAY
Outside my window...rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain.
I am thinking...that I am not in very much of a Pollyanna mood right now.
I am thankful for...a home where I am safe and warm.
From the learning rooms...learned a song tonight on my guitar, plus happy birthday earlier in the week.
From the kitchen...pork rubbed with Greek oregano and cilantro.
I am wearing...a camp shirt and cut-off sweat pants.
I am creating...nothing, really.
I am going...--possibly--to go crazy.
I am reading...English Fairy Tales.
I am hoping...to have a better attitude.
I am hearing...Pop rummaging around in the kitchen.
Around the house...it is silent except for the above-mentioned rummaging.
One of my favorite things...meeting new people, like Jay, whom I met last Friday at the Subway here in town.
A few plans for the rest of the week: clean my room maybe

Books-A-Million

These two are some of the wonderful people at the Books-a-million. I saw my favorite B-A-M person that day--Michael--but I didn't think about getting his picture. The employees at this bookstore just plain ol' rock. They always help me get what I need. They listen to my concerns when I have them. It is a comfortable place to be. Y'all should go. Just sayin'.

This is Kacie. She was named after a girl in a song AND she is really cool and super smart and she knows a ton about music and movies! : )

This is Roy. He is funny and very helpful. In fact, he made me go back twice and find a third book cos they were on sale--buy two get one free. :)

Kute and Kurious Kayleigh

I was running late this past Sunday morning, so I didn't get to Bible Class/Worship until a few minutes after it began. Usually, I sit up on the front left, but since I was late, I didn't want to disturb people, so I sat in the back with Kayleigh and her grandma.
Kayleigh wanted to sit by me which was gratifying. She is just so cute. When she saw that I took my shoes off (I hate shoes), she immediately reached down to take her shoes off.
Tell ya what--that girl is one Curious George. Every single thing I had was interesting to her. My pink pepper spray key-chain entrances her every single time she sees me. In fact, sometimes when I am putting on my coat after worship, I see her marching over to me, with a smile on her face. The first thing she says to me is "Can I see your weapon?" She calls it a weapon cos the first time she asked me what it was, I told her the truth. I also told her that she CANNOT press the button. When she asked why, I told her that it would REALLY REALLY hurt someone. What made me laugh is that that evening at worship, her grandma came up to me and asked me what I told her about the pink pepper spray case. After I told her, she laughed out loud. I was puzzled until she told me that our favorite blonde girl told her that if you press the button, you would MURDER someone. Ha! How hilarious! A funny result on our three person "telephone" game.
Next, she asked me about the key-chain which holds my USB flash drive. Since there was no flash drive in the leather case, I figured the easiest way to explain it to her was to grab a piece of scrap paper and stuff it in there. She thought it was interesting, but immediately removed my scrunched up scrap of paper, climbed over me, and whispered something to her grandma. I was curious and delighted when I saw her take something out of her grandma's hand and insert it into the leather case. It was a slice of gum! How cute! She understood what the case was for and found a really cool way to use it.
She loves my Kindle--on which I house several books, one of which is the New American Standard Bible. She asked what it was and picked it up, wondering how it worked. She wanted to know how I turned the pages. I showed her and then she proceeded to turn the pages back and forth for about five to ten minutes. She loved my 'puter Bible!
When I took out my money to put into the plate during the Lord's Supper, she grabbed it from me and said, "I'll put this in the plate. I'm good at that job!" HAHA!! How hilarious! but I'm glad that she likes putting money in the plate. Maybe she'll be very generous as she grows older.
After worship was over, I asked her to pose for a photo. She has my key-chain as a necklace, with the pink pepper spray as a pendant. In her right hand is my ten dollar bill. In her left hand is my 'puter Bible and on her face are my reading glasses which she took earlier in the service. She wore and modeled them for me and her grandmother. Just cute as a button!!

After worship, I ate a personal pan pizza--with pepperoni, black olives, green peppers, and mushrooms--and then went to CVS to buy a few things. I saw a pink patchwork stuffed animal, a bear. I couldn't resist it or the $2.99 heart necklace with a pink rhinestone center. She really enjoyed the gifts and when worship began, she scooted right up next to me, snuggled in to my side and told me, with her eyes closed and a smile on her face, "I like you."

She made my day. Que adorable, yeah?

Our shoe-less feet!

My portable gum container.

The Phoenix Project, 13JAN11

On the day after Christmas--as I was driving back home to Buna--I saw myself in the mirror of a truck stop. Man, I looked OLD! 'Course that could have been cos of my lack of sleep the weeks leading up to Boxing Day. Whatever the reason, I felt and looked old. I was also completely aware of the fact that I have gained some weight since I moved to Buna. Very few of my clothes fit me anymore. Because of these new realizations, I decided that I must make some changes. I'm writing this blog a little late cos I've already begun the project. Two days before New Year's Day, I began exercising.

I bought some exercise DVDS. One is a Latin Dancing Cardio DVD taught by some of the professional dancers on that celebrity dance show (can't remember the name). One is a Kettlebell workout with Jillian from The Biggest Loser. One is a 4-DVD bellydancing set. Of course, there is also walking and hiking on my days off and dancing around my room with my IPOD in my ears. So, I haven't been able to work out every day, but I'm getting to the point where I'm enjoying it. So, I think it'll be easier than I thought it would be.

Some of you know that I went to the Cardiologist on Monday. There is nothing really wrong right now. My heart rate does go really high sometimes, that's true. However, it always goes back down to normal eventually. The doctors seem to think that this is a good sign. I'm going to trust them, of course. One thing that makes me happy about the result of this visit to my Cardiologist is that I don't have to any more medications for my heart! YAY! One thing she emphasized; however, is that I MUST get my diabetes under control and I MUST work on getting and maintaining a healthier body. What a task!!

I have a seriously challenging project to accomplish. My Cardiologist, PA Joshua, told me that I MUST commit to a complete lifestyle change. I have to exercise an average of 20 minutes a day. I have to change my eating style. I have to stay away from sugar as much as possible (sigh). I have to stay away from salt as often as possible. She suggested baking and grilling and chicken and fish more than any other options. She suggested more fruit (which Pop and I are pretty good about anyway) and veggies. Also, more water!!

One good piece of news is that I'm already losing weight. Granted it isn't much, but I've lost 2 pounds since my last visit to the doctor. On the way home from the doctor, I bought a Brita water filter. Ya know, those bottled waters can start building up to a hefty price. I bought the Brita for $20.00. Granted the replacement filters can be a bit expensive, but even if they're $ 15.00 each, they're supposed to last two months. Buying 6 to 8 servings of water a day can build up, too, yeah? I also bought some veggies (brussels sprouts, asparagus, and some lettuce) so hopefully, we can get started right away with this new commitment.

So, I'm calling this The Phoenix Project. I'll be updating at least once a month with new numbers--even if they're bad numbers. I won't be telling you which body parts I'm measuring (although perhaps you might guess) I'll just have them numbered and I'll report on how much I've gained or lost on the numbered area. Hopefully, the numbers will change in a more healthy way. Since I will be doing some weights (Jillians's Kettlebell) then the numbers may go up, but that'll be cos I'm gaining muscle instead of losing fat--although hopefully, I'll lose fat, too.

So, now you're informed. Let's get on with The Phoenix Project!
Here are the numbers, taken today 13JAN11:
1-17 6/8th inches
2-43 inches
3-39 inches
4-45 5/8 inches
5-15 inches

And here is a picture of me taken on 03JAN11, a few days after I started the exercising. I'll be taking this picture once a month so you can see if any changes are taking places. Okay, wish me success!! :)

I am thankful for...the fact that I haven't taken down my pretty Christmas tree yet. It is so purty!

From the kitchen...some ice cream in the freezer. And what is most annoying is that it is quietly crooning my name.
I am wearing...blue, green, white, and grey pajama bottoms and a green shirt.
I am creating...something for some friends of mine because I opted to participate in the "Home-made pay it forward 2011."
I am going...to sleep in my own room tonight!!!
I am reading...Pollyanna Grows Up.
I am hoping...that the Cardiologist can find a somewhat natural way to stop my elevated heart rate.
I am hearing...a commercial on TV-land.
Around the house...Pop and I are watching 'Everybody loves Raymond.'
One of my favorite things...seeing people who make me feel special.
A few plans for the rest of the week: a trip to Galveston on Friday!
