Taiwan Bucket List, # 1

So, as many of y'all know, my departure date for Taiwan has been pushed back due to several things:

a) Covid has finally reached the Island of Taiwan and they aren't hiring people right now.  They are in level 3.  The restaurants are all closed except for take-out, etc. All the language schools (I'll be working in one of that type of school for at least the first one to two years, by the way) are all closed, so the need for English teachers is down to nil.  As a matter of fact, many of the foreign language teachers have left the island to go back home until this all blows over.

b)  The schools won't even hold interviews with prospective teachers unless they have an actual photograph of the person's college diploma. When I finally received mine mid-June, Covid had already made its way to the island. Now, it is a waiting game as to when they'll start hiring again. The good news is that their levels of Covid infections are significantly less than what ours were here in the states.  Also, they're already receiving the vaccine (Thanks USA and Japan!), so they'll liking reach herd immunity--as we have here--much, much sooner than it took us to do. My AWESOME Mandarin teacher, Diane, told me yesterday that they are 'down to 100 cases'; however, I don't know if that means 100 deaths, or just cases and if it means a day or a week or a...month, etc.   I guess the point is that they are already on the downswing.  I have a friend from the Taiwan expats Facebook group who says he thinks they'll be back in the swing of things by October.  I'll keep y'all updated.

So, when I'm leaving is up in the air, yeah?  However, that does not stop me from dreaming or making plans!!  I'm writing my first Taiwan bucket list item in this blog today. Now, understand that the bucket list items will be added as I think of them and not necessarily in the order in which I'll do them.

I'll preface by asking y'all if you realized how much I have really enjoyed watching Korean and Taiwanese language television series on Netflix over the course of the last year? I have become a fanatic. (and I guess--cards on the table--it doesn't hurt that the swoonworthy Taiwanese and Korean male lead actors they choose really illustrate God's amazing ability at creating 'good scenery!' LOL)  It's mostly all I watch now.  I know I won't be able to easily pick up language that way, but--at least--I'm getting some hints about what the culture is like in these two Asian countries, yeah?  That being said, I just finished watching a Korean television series called, "Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol."  (Those of you who don't recognize the title can imagine you're singing the first four words of 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and you'll have a very good idea of what one of the major themes in the series is. I really enjoyed the series. However, if you're going to watch it, just know that the last fourth of the series is kinda sad and that the last six minutes of the series is non-sensical.  It's still good, though.

The fictional town in which most of the action is set is called 'Eunpo.'   It is not a real town; however,  most of the filming is done in a southern South Korea town called Mokpo.  It has just recently become a tourist town, of sorts, and several films/t.v. series have been filmed there.  It is very colorful and looks like a fun place to be. The town has taken it upon themselves to preserve many of the television and film sets from the filming of various of the shows, so that fans can go visit.

Therefore, the first item on my Taiwan bucket list is--during a summer vacation trip to Korea--I will go spend a day or two in Eunpo/Mokpo and take photos of the colorful city and visit the sets from 'Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol' and maybe go fishing.  I'll be sure to bring my camera and my computer to write blogs about my adventures there.  I hope y'all will join me on that future trip via our pensivepollyanna (or even in person! :)

This is an image of one of the alleyways in Mokpo.  During the series, there were many                           colorful shots that made me want to go visit, just for the colorful photographs I could                               take.  I found this one on Wheretokim.com

Conundrum

I'm having some kinda weird thoughts.   This week, as many of you know, is the one leading up to Father's Day.  I get emails trying to encourage me to buy something for my Daddy.  I hear commercials on the radio.  I see ads on websites.  I'll have to admit.  I really, intensely dislike these few weeks before Father's Day.  My Daddy died 7 years ago. The ads make me miss him more and I really don't like the ridiculous grieving that surfaces back up so intensely.
The things is--my birth mother died, too. It will be 19 years ago this November.  Why don't all the Mother's Day ads bug me?   I worry that I--somehow--love her less.  I don't like the idea that this might be factual.  Or...could it be because the main mom in my life is still living--the one who was ALWAYS there for me from 2.5 years onward and STILL is?
I guess it shouldn't bother me as much as it is today, but that is what is on my mind.

Health

Okay, so I know that I CAN NOT talk, really. I've been obese for years (at least according to medical charts, yeah?)   With the help of my team of AWESOME Veterans Administration doctors over the course of the last 7 months, I've REALLY got my act together.

The pharmacist doc had a long conversation with me in December and prescribed me something called "Ozempic" which helps your insulin work better and has the added benefit of a slight appetite suppressant.  Anyway, the fact of the matter is that  (with the NOOM app) and Ozempic, and TINY bit of effort on my part. (I park the furthest way I can from everything, I stop eating when I'm not hungry anymore, I try to make good choices as to the type of fuel I'm putting into my body, etc.)  I have lost a total of 38 pounds since December 10th.

I have noticed several outcomes from this weight loss:

1) I don't mind my face in photographs or the mirror.  I'm conflicted about this one. I hate that I feel prettier with less weight on.  I feel like I ought to be beautiful for my sense of humor, intelligence, and good heart and NOT a skinnier face, etc.  But--the fact of the matter is that I do like my face better with less weight on it.

2) It sure is easier to walk and I have less sciatica pain.

3) I have worn a size 16 jeans my entire adult life.  I tried on a pair of jeans at Walmart a week ago and I fit into a size 8!!!!

4) Pretty much ALL of my lab numbers are BEYOND awesome!   Before the weight loss, my cholesterol was 197, which is just the tiniest pinky finger away from unacceptable.  In my last test from May 26th, my cholesterol was 96!!   My A1C (which is the test that measures how much sugar was floating around in my blood) went from 9.8 about a year ago, to 6.3 now (which, i must brag, is COMPLETELY within ACCEPTABLE, healthy range for a diabetic.  This is REALLY a huge deal, y'all.

So, I just wanted to do some lectur-ey encouragement for those who are struggling with weight.  IT can be done. It'll just take some patience, hard work, and time.  But you can get rid of that excess weight and MOST IMPORTANTLY, your health will be back on target!   If ***I*** can do it, so can you! :)

Okay, enough of my encouraging rant! Love y'all!!!

Poem: 'Ode to the KK'

I'm not sure if I have this one on this blog, so...just in case!

ODE TO THE "KK"

30 May 08 Friday

Current mood: full cuz i ate a sample and a spicy kolache, too.

Ode to the "KK"

for Fred and Susan

Rows of donuts

marching two by two.

Once hot, but plain;

now, they shine anew

with melty glaze

afixed atop the rounds

This store never empties

because their fans abound!!

I was inspired last night whilst enjoying a donut at Krispy Kreme. Karen and I had just finished directing the annual Spring Play where we teach drama part time. I thought a Krispy Kreme donut would be a very nice celebratory event.

Have you been to a Krispy Kreme? They have a conveyor belt upon which the donuts ride. They come up from the hot fryer, stand under a glaze shower, of sorts, and then "march" on down the line to a location where they are packed up or put on display. I'd never been inside a Krispy Kreme and thought this idea was really kinda "neat-o".

Raspberry filled donut. It was the kind I was eating when I was inspired to write this classic piece of American literature. Surely it will go down in the history books as one of the finest poems ever written!! ;-P
