I was reading in an article in the TIME MAGAZINE issue for 13DEC10 about robotic surgery, etc. when I came across something really interesting.
The first surgeons were barbers. After they were finished performing surgery, they would tie up their bloodied rags outside their shop. The wind would blow the bloodied rags around the pole out in front of the store. Supposedly, this is from where the red and white striped poles originated. How interesting!
